Paul Auster, the prolific Brooklyn-based writer and filmmaker, has died at the age of 77, his agent Carol Mann confirmed to Entertainment Weekly.

Auster was the author of 34 books, including the acclaimed "New York Trilogy," which was published in the 1980s and established him as a major figure in American literature.

His other works include the novels "4 3 2 1," "Sunset Park," and "The Book of Illusions," as well as the screenplays for the films "Smoke," "Blue in the Face," and "Lulu on the Bridge."

Auster's work was often characterized by its inventive narratives, metafictional elements, and exploration of themes such as identity, memory, and loss.

His work was translated into more than 40 languages and received numerous awards, including the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature in 2006 and the Man Booker International Prize in 2008.

Auster's death leaves a significant void in the literary world, and his work will continue to be read and enjoyed by generations to come.
