Sergio Perez Takes Victory in Baku, Max Verstappen Retires

Mexican Driver Celebrates After Lap-Long Pursuit of World Champion

Baku, Azerbaijan - June 12, 2023

Sergio Perez has emerged victorious in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, becoming the first driver to win the race twice in his career. The Red Bull driver's triumph was sealed after a thrilling pursuit of Max Verstappen, the reigning world champion.

Verstappen was forced to retire from the race due to a power unit issue, handing the lead to Perez. The Mexican driver then extended his advantage over George Russell in the Mercedes, eventually crossing the finish line with a comfortable margin of victory.

Russell held on to second place, while Verstappen's retirement allowed Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez to secure a one-two finish for the team. The victory marks a significant milestone for Perez, who has consistently performed at a high level in recent races.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix witnessed a dramatic turn of events, with several key drivers facing setbacks. Charles Leclerc, who started from pole position, crashed out of the race early on, while Carlos Sainz suffered an engine failure that ended his hopes of a strong finish.

Perez's victory strengthens his position in the drivers' championship standings, while Verstappen's retirement has opened up the title race. The next Formula 1 race will take place in Canada on June 19, with the paddock eagerly anticipating another thrilling chapter in the 2023 season.
